Vanessa Lee, Publisher, Cruise & Travel Lifestyles Magazine
Dreams Can Come True
One of the things I very much enjoy about publishing a magazine is the surprise (and delight) on people’s faces when I tell them what I do for a living. Often I receive comments such as “well that’s a dream job” or “ you must travel all the time” and “I would love to do that”.
Yes I know I am fortunate to have chosen this path but as I often note - being in the publishing business is not my “day job”. I have been in the travel and cruise industry for almost 40 years and will celebrate that milestone this coming December. Publishing is more than a hobby, it is certainly a business and a successful one but, in fact, I do have to pinch myself sometimes when I remember that I have realized a dream.
I had always wanted to publish and own a travel magazine and was fortunate enough to make that happen about 10 years ago. We’re now readying ourselves to publish our 27th issue and planning to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first issue, which came out in March 2007. All this will coincide with a variety of other very special occasions in 2017 - most importantly the auspicious occasion of Canada’s 150th birthday! More on that soon. And of course for hockey fans, we’ll be celebrating the 100th anniversary for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Perhaps 2017 will see a Stanley Cup back in Toronto? It’s only been 50 years since the last one!
One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a publisher though is hearing from our readers who write to tell us how much they love each issue, to ensure that we know when they move so they don’t miss a mailing and, in one recent instance, to send us a photo of themselves on a cruise with a copy of the magazine in hand! That’s the shot you see below, from avid reader Corry who shared this fun photo with us recently. Without our readers the magazine would have no voice, our advertisers’ messages would go unheard and our talented writers would not be able to tell you their stories of wonder and joy as they travel the globe seeking new places, great experiences and the most comfortable beds! You might never be treated to the inner secrets of some of the most out-of-the-way spots, those exotic and charming hotels and those incredibly beautiful beaches.
Corry, Avid Cruise & Travel Lifestyles Reader
With our keyboards, we inform and entertain you, and from the photographs chosen, we hope that we transport you to other lands, with fabulous vistas, close-ups of animals and our feathered friends, and the best sunrises and sunsets over churches, steeples, temples and castles. We want you to feel as if you are already in each place or at the least, that our words and images can stir your imagination to such a degree that you say: “I want to go there”.
That is what publishing means to me; to seek out the best writers with the most informative and enjoyable story-telling abilities so that you can learn more about our diverse and wondrous planet. When it’s time to plan your next vacation, whether it’s a trip a few hours away or half a world away, you know that Cruise and Travel Lifestyles and our travel agency partners, will provide you with that sense of place and take you on a journey that will be long-remembered. It won’t matter whether it’s from the comfort of your armchair or from a ship, river cruise, train, hot-air balloon, airplane, bicycle or simply shanks pony – your own two feet – it will be wondrous.
I hope you stay on this journey of discovery with us, and thank you for being a part of my dream.
P.S. In January 2017, a special part of our issue will be dedicated to Canada, my adopted homeland and the country I have loved for more than 40 years. As we commemorate the 150th birthday of this nation and highlight what Canada means to us, we hope you will join us in celebrating our remarkable land, “the True North, strong and free”.
