It’s not every day a Canadian kid gets to meet a Queen, but watching 5-year-old Tess de Vries getting ready to welcome Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands on board ms Koningsdam was one of my favourite parts of last Friday’s elegant ship Dedication Ceremony in Rotterdam.
Skipping around in her sparkly running shoes, getting her dad (Koningsdam’s Captain Emiel de Vries) and mom Susan, to smell the pretty flowers clutched in her little white-gloved hands, Tess set the happy mood for the day-long celebrations as Holland America Line officially welcomed its newest ship into the fleet.

Her Majesty Queen Máxima seemed enchanted by the cute daughter of Captain de Vries as well, bending down to accept the flowers, chatting with the happy little girl and taking Tess’s hand to continue along the brilliant blue carpet to begin her official ceremonies as royal godmother.
Holland America Line has a long history with the Dutch Royal Family and the Netherlands. “As our company was founded in Rotterdam more than 143 years ago, it was fitting to return to our roots for Koningsdam’s royal dedication,” said Orlando Ashford, Holland America’s president, of the special events taking place just steps from the cruise line’s former headquarters.

In honor of this rich Dutch heritage, the company has also announced that the name of their next Pinnacle Class ship will be ms Nieuw Statendam.
“We are writing the next chapter in our evolving story, yet we are a company with a deep history, and the name ms Nieuw Statendam perfectly blends our past, present and future,” continued Ashford. “The previous Statendam ships have been among the most beloved in our history, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this beautiful new ship with our guests in 2018.”
