There’s a distinctive new ship on the horizon – arriving on our shores in December, 2018. A ship so bold and so beyond the expected that it will be the epitome of modern luxury, will truly amaze, and best of all, will provide a refreshing new take on ocean-going cruising.
There is no doubt that the 2,918 guest Celebrity Edge, a new class of ship for Celebrity Cruises, will be a game-changer. The incredible design, the concept of bringing guests closer to the sea in so many fascinating ways, will afford a tremendous showcase for this transformative ship.
Celebrity has embarked on a brave new journey with the introduction of their Edge-class ships. A second ship, Celebrity Beyond, will join Celebrity Edge in Spring 2020 and both are being designed by an award-winning team that includes renowned British designer, Kelly Hoppen and the impressive architect Tom Wright. Celebrity’s Design Ambassador, the highly-regarded Nate Berkus has also assumed a unique role and an exclusive partnership with the cruise company. The design icon will work closely with Celebrity on the roll-out of all ships in the Edge Class. All three are bringing their personal design philosophy and impeccable credentials to the cruise line’s cutting-edge innovation and really breathtaking design –and notably, the first ship to be designed in 3-D. Two more Edge-class ships will arrive in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Why will Edge differ so much – not simply from other Celebrity ships but particularly from the five revolutionary Solstice Class ships many cruisers have long enjoyed? Why is she unique? Her name alone sets the stage for so many amazing new features!
First of all, Celebrity has shaken up some important ocean cruising concepts by purposefully designing a ship to bring the guest and the ocean closer. Small touches abound, such as having sun loungers face outward towards the sea rather than inward to a pool. It may seem a simple switch, but it’s so logical. Offering a reimagined Resort Deck rather than a simple pool deck is another part of the experience guests will enjoy –connecting them both with the sea and to all the destinations each cruise will include. One of the most wonderful things about cruising is the sea view and the magic of sailing into or away from a beautiful port of call. All this will be front and center on the Celebrity Edge Class ships so be prepared for a stunning departure from the norm on Edge, Celebrity’s first new ship class in 10 years.
There is so much to discover about Celebrity Edge and more information about the ship will be released in coming months – with a special focus on cuisine. For now, what we know sounds endlessly enticing and tantalizing, clearly relating to back to Celebrity’s five-pillar brand focus – Destination, Design, Accommodation, Cuisine and Service.
A whole new class of dramatically expanded staterooms will be one of the most amazing new Accommodation elements. The 918 new Edge Staterooms with their Infinite Verandas as well as the 16 specially designed for solo travelers, will turn guest rooms into wonderful seamless spaces – all the way from stateroom entry, quite literally to the water’s edge. This will represent another revolution in accommodation design. The veranda will seem to come into the room as the room extends to the outside. With a simple touch of a button, guests will enjoy open-air access to the sea. Glass French doors will open to the veranda and can then be closed back to the sides, thus extending the room into the veranda space if so desired. This clever design provides for another 23 percent more square-footage and 10 percent larger bathrooms than the Solstice Class ships. This extra space ensures there is a bigger bed – all are king size – and provides more storage and living space. The rooms will be gorgeous in every way - furnishings, use of color and of course, creative design. In the Sky Suites guests will enjoy a bathroom that offers a view from behind the bed right out to the veranda and – beyond!
Celebrity’s Chairman stated: “We wanted to get much closer to the sea”.
Celebrity has more than doubled the number of suites on the Edge class compared to the Solstice ships, adding two spectacular new categories. There are the fabulous Iconic Suites situated above the ship’s bridge. At almost 2,600 sq ft, these two-bedroom, two-bathroom suites feature incredible views of the ocean from the panoramic windows surrounding the living and dining rooms and the bedroom. These suites also boast a 700 sq. ft. veranda that provides a 270-degree view of the sea. Guests will feel as if they are on top of the world!
And there’s more! Six stunning split-level Edge Villas will offer wonderful views from two stories of windows, private plunge pools and direct walk-out access to the Retreat Sundeck. And speaking of the Retreat, this is the ultimate utopian sanctuary for sophisticated world travelers wanting more private space. They will enjoy their own Retreat Pool and Lounge with around the clock care and personal butler service. There will also be an exquisite restaurant – Luminae – designed expressly for Suite Class guests.
There’s a true sea change coming to the Resort Deck of Celebrity Edge.
This expansive space will include the beautiful Rooftop Garden and the ever-popular, adults-only Solarium – both pivotal elements in bringing cruisers and the ocean together. You’ll be delighted at the endless ways to enjoy the warm sun and blue skies as you sail from one wonderful port to another. The ship’s main pool is here with an outward-facing terraced deck offering the best views from your sun lounger as well as two very sexy, martini-glass shaped, two-level hot tubs and a beautiful mosaic piece of art. Add 20-foot high soaring pool cabanas and you can see how vibrant and innovative this area will be. The Rooftop Garden is a spacious, playful environment for relaxing, wandering, and enjoying music – a real novelty as the musicians sit in decorative “trees” to entertain you. This deck will also showcase Celebrity’s “A Taste of Film” dinner and movie concept with a massive screen and ample seating for a casual evening dining al fresco while enjoying a food-oriented film. This imaginative space, the brain-child of celebrated architect Tom Wright is another unexpected and charming playscape on the Edge.
We’ve saved the best for last with the ground breaking, totally Magic Carpet concept. You will not have seen anything like this before - a remarkable trend-setting moment in ship design. Cantilevered from the side of the ship, the Magic Carpet gives the Celebrity Edge a distinctive profile that can’t be ignored. The size of a tennis court, this engineering feat scales the 16-deck ship throughout the day and into the evening, traveling from Deck 2 to Deck 5, up to the Resort Deck and even to Deck 16, the summit of the ship. There, it becomes the ultimate specialty restaurant, offering a unique “Dinner on the Edge” for 90 diners.
Alongside Deck 14 the Magic Carpet becomes an open-air extension of the main pool and resort area. When she is on Deck 5 Magic Carpet becomes an extension of a specialty restaurant, offering al fresco dining, a spot for cocktails and a DJ spinning tunes. Designed to offer guests a luxury embarkation station, the Magic Carpet is the key component to the Destination Gateway where guests will board sleek Edge Launches as they go ashore for exploration. Totally transformational!
