Holland America's Flagship Rotterdam to Debut in Mediterranean for 2027

New cruises combine marquee destinations with immersive itineraries designed for off-peak travel in the region

For the first time, Holland America Line’s flagship Rotterdam will sail a series of cruises in the Mediterranean, with bookings now open for fall 2027. The five itineraries span both the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, offering a chance to experience the region through a relaxed, late-season lens.

The 10- and 11-day voyages call at a mix of standout destinations, from Lisbon and Naples to Kotor, Rhodes and Alexandria. Select itineraries include scenic cruising through the Strait of Messina and past Stromboli, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Sailings can also be combined into longer itineraries, allowing guests to experience a broader mix of the Mediterranean. The season concludes with a 14-day transatlantic crossing from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale.

Expanding fall and winter Mediterranean programming
The addition of Rotterdam builds on Holland America Line’s commitment to European cruising and broader Mediterranean presence for fall 2027 through winter 2028, with more than 20 sailings available across Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam, Oosterdam and Zuiderdam.

Itineraries are designed to offer more time ashore, with a mix of marquee ports and less-visited destinations alongside extended stays that allow for deeper exploration. The HANSEATIC spirit Completes First Major Dry Dock Refit

The newest ship in Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ HANSEATIC fleet, the HANSEATIC spirit has successfully completed its first scheduled dry dock period at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany. During the ten-day refurbishment, public spaces throughout the expedition ship were refreshed in line with the brand’s “inspired by nature” design concept, giving the vessel a renewed look ahead of its upcoming expedition season.

Work focused primarily on enhancements to guest areas, including the spa, restaurants, lounges, reception, and select suites. Renovations included new carpeting and flooring, refreshed paintwork, updated spa facilities, and improvements to cabin showers. In addition, the ship underwent its mandatory five-year technical inspection and certification.

Following the refit, the HANSEATIC spirit departed Bremerhaven with a fresh coat of paint and welcomed guests aboard for an eight-day voyage through Northern Europe before continuing to Scotland and the Arctic for the summer season.

This year’s expedition program includes voyages to Northwest Greenland and the Canadian Arctic, followed by itineraries in Western Europe and Southern Africa.

Mediterranean Sea Will Provide Rare “Sunset Eclipse” View this Summer

Cruise ships positioned off Spain such as Holland America’s Oosterdam will likely capture rare horizon-proximity effect

Astronomers are predicting that people who choose to view the Aug. 12, 2026, solar eclipse from off the coast of Spain will be in position for a unique view of the path of totality. Experts say the region may offer one of the most striking vantage points, as the eclipse is expected to occur low on the horizon in parts of the western Mediterranean, creating a rare so-called sunset eclipse.

“What makes the Mediterranean so compelling for this eclipse is the setting itself,” said Dr. Adam Burgasser, professor at UC San Diego, who will sail aboard Holland America’s Oosterdam to guide guests through the experience. “In parts of the western Mediterranean, totality will occur low on the horizon, creating a rare ‘sunset eclipse.’ Instead of straining your neck to look straight overhead, you’ll be watching the sun and moon meet each other at the horizon, with the normally gorgeous reds and oranges of a sunset sky suddenly obscured by the moon. Expect long shadows, a seemingly larger-than-normal sun, a visual illusion known as the horizon-proximity effect, and the potential for a dramatic diamond ring effect just as the sun dips into the sea. It will be a far more visually compelling, almost cinematic experience. The upcoming eclipse will also be the first widely accessible total solar eclipse across Europe in decades, so demand to view it on land will be extremely high. Viewing from a ship on the Mediterranean offers the best observing conditions while avoiding many of the logistical challenges people will face ashore.”

Oosterdam will be positioning for eclipse viewing as part of a 13-day cruise departing Lisbon, Portugal, Aug. 9 that remains open for booking. The experience will be enhanced through onboard programming designed around the eclipse, including themed food and beverage offerings, dedicated viewing events and presentations led by Burgasser, a seasoned eclipse expert who previously sailed aboard Koningsdam during the eclipse of 2024. Guests can attend lectures and Q&A sessions in the days leading up to the event, as well as hear live commentary during totality.

Sailing Aug. 9–22, 2026, the itinerary departs Lisbon and includes a call in Alicante, Spain, before positioning off the Spanish coast for eclipse viewing. The ship then spends an overnight in Barcelona, Spain, followed by visits to Port-Vendres and Marseille in France and Monte Carlo, Monaco. In Italy, guests can explore Florence and Pisa from Livorno, as well as Rome, Naples and Messina in Sicily, before returning to Civitavecchia.

To mark World Oceans Day, MSC Foundation and MSC Cruises announced the launch of Oceans Day powered by MSC Foundation, a new onboard program designed to help children and families better understand, celebrate and care for the ocean through experiences that combine learning, creativity and participation. The program is expected to engage thousands of children from around the world each year, helping nurture the next generation of ocean ambassadors.

Developed by MSC Foundation together with MSC Cruises’ Entertainment team, Oceans Day powered by MSC Foundation is progressively rolling out across the MSC Cruises fleet, transforming every cruise into an opportunity to connect younger generations with marine conservation. The program draws on the MSC Foundation’s years of collaboration with conservation and education partners, combining lessons from its restoration work at Ocean Cay in The Bahamas with the expertise of organizations such as Mission Blue and Marevivo to create immersive, age-appropriate experiences. Built around three pillars — celebrating the ocean on every cruise, placing children and families at the centre, and fostering ocean literacy — the program offers children aged 3 to 17 a range of interactive activities. From Everybody Loves the Sea, an original song developed with a children’s choir, to games, quizzes, creative workshops, drawing activities and conservation challenges, each element is designed to spark curiosity about the marine world. Guests will also be encouraged to make personal pledges to protect the ocean through the “My Wish for the Ocean” initiative and receive an Ocean Ambassador Passport filled with practical actions they can continue at home. The experience culminates in a celebratory parade featuring children’s participation and music designed to reinforce positive environmental messages in a fun and memorable way.

Updates across suites, dining, and gathering spaces reflect the most comprehensive drydock in the line’s history

Seabourn’s award-winning Seabourn Quest has emerged from drydock with the most comprehensive interior update in the line's history. Enhancements across suites, public spaces, dining venues and the spa create a more relaxed and refined onboard experience, further elevating the sense of comfort and understated luxury guests know and value.

The ship will continue its Mediterranean season through November 2026, and sail a series of immersive seven-day voyages between Dubrovnik, Fusina (Venice), Istanbul and Athens, calling on yacht harbors and islands in Croatia, Greece, Montenegro and Turkey. Each voyage can be combined to create 14- and 21-day sailings.

Reimagined Public Spaces
The Club underwent one of the most significant transformations on board, with a sophisticated, speakeasy-inspired ambiance, reconfigured layout, updated bar design and new lighting that reshape how the space is experienced throughout the evening.
The redesigned layout creates a more cohesive atmosphere for live music and social gatherings, while also improving the flow across the venue, allowing guests to move naturally between the bar, lounge seating and dance floor.

Across the rest of ship, public areas have been updated to enhance flow and atmosphere, making it easier for guests to move naturally through the ship, settle in, and enjoy each part of the day. The atrium, corridors and stairways received new carpeting, featuring patterns inspired by the organic movement of water. The main pool deck debuts with all new sound system and lighting, surrounded by renewed teak deck.

The Club

Seabourn Square now features a warmer, living room atmosphere including new furniture and limited bistro-style seating. The Observation Bar received a refresh with updated carpet and furnishings, creating a brighter, more relaxed setting for panoramic views. The Spa was enhanced with a redesigned reception area, all new gym equipment and updated salon, including new finishes, lighting and furnishings, creating a more serene, calming environment that deepens the sense of relaxation and well-being.

The onboard shops were also enhanced with updated finishes, lighting and display elements, offering a more inviting atmosphere for guests to browse and discover curated pieces. These updates align with recent upgrades across the Seabourn ocean fleet.

Seabourn Square

Enhanced Dining Venues
The Colonnade was refreshed with new flooring, carpeting, seating and an updated service line to highlight live cooking. In The Restaurant, new carpet and drapery introduce a lighter and more modern look, enhancing the overall ambiance while preserving the venue’s refined feel.

Refreshed Suites and Accommodations
Suites across all categories received new mattresses and plush new wool carpeting, while Penthouse and premium suites also received updated veranda furniture, creating a more inviting space to relax and take in the view.

Design Approach
Together, these updates reflect an evolved design approach that brings a more residential and personal feel to Seabourn Quest. Drawing from the textures and tones of the places Seabourn explores, the interiors incorporate layered materials and finishes that create a cohesive environment and improve the way guests move through and experience each space.

Veranda Suite

“Our goal was to create spaces that feel natural, intuitive and effortlessly comfortable for guests,” said Linh Nguyen, Senior Manager, Interior Design & Assets Management. “Rather than referencing a single destination, the design takes a broader approach, using materiality and scale to shape spaces that feel balanced, familiar and easy to experience.”

Incorporating Sustainable Practices
Alongside elevated design updates, meaningful steps were taken to reduce waste and extend the life of materials on board. More than 20,000 square metres (approx. 215,000 square feet) of carpet were replaced. All original carpet was diverted from landfill and is planned to be repurposed into new carpet padding that the shipyard will reintegrate on board for a future Seabourn renovation. Updated suites now feature biodegradable Cradle to Cradle Dansk Wilton wool carpet to further support a closed-loop lifecycle approach. In addition, all mattresses were deconstructed for recycling by the shipyard, while lounge furnishings were donated to local Italian non-profit organization, extending the life of these materials, redirecting them from landfill disposal, and benefitting surrounding communities.

The 2026 drydock builds on previous enhancement cycles and represents the most comprehensive interior investment in Seabourn’s history. The scope of work also included updates to crew areas, amenities and accommodations, supporting the onboard team that delivers the personalized service at the heart of the Seabourn experience.

For the first time, guests can experience all five Great Lakes together with the St Lawrence River on two 21-day voyages between Milwaukee and Halifax.

The new routes were created in response to strong demand for more in-depth Great Lakes expeditions and will replace three previously planned shorter cruises. Together with two existing itineraries, the 2027 season will feature four voyages exploring North America’s vast freshwater region.
Designed specifically for navigating narrow locks and shallow waterways, the HANSEATIC inspiration is one of the few expedition ships capable of operating in the Great Lakes region. Guests will experience spectacular lock passages along the Welland Canal and St Lawrence River, combined with Zodiac rides, hikes, wildlife encounters and cultural highlights across Canada and the United States.

Holland America Line is introducing year-round cruising in Europe, expanding its presence in the region with an extended 2027-2028 season sailing through winter. With Nieuw Statendam remaining in Europe year-round, the cruise line is offering more opportunities than ever to experience the region beyond traditional summer travel.

The expanded season includes a dozen cruises aboard Nieuw Statendam across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, significantly increasing Holland America Line’s offseason presence in the region. The new itineraries add more than 70 additional port days year-over-year, giving guests more time in port along with extended stays and fewer crowds. The deployment also includes two additional voyages aboard Zuiderdam, further expanding options for guests exploring Europe during the winter season.

Christmas Market Cruises Bring Europe’s Holiday Traditions to Life

Nieuw Statendam’sholiday sailings are designed to immerse guests in Europe at one of its most atmospheric times of year, when city squares glow with lights, markets fill with local artisans and the pace of travel invites deeper exploration. With overnights and extended stays built into each itinerary, guests have the time to experience the traditions, cuisine and rhythms that define the season.

A 13-day Baltic and Scandinavian Christmas Markets: Stockholm cruise sails roundtrip from Rotterdam or Dover, calling at Kiel, the gateway to Hamburg’s well-known Christmas markets, as well as Tallinn and Copenhagen. Beyond the holiday season, Nieuw Statendam’s winter and early spring sailings shift south to the Mediterranean, where guests can experience the region at a slower pace. With mild temperatures and a rich mix of seasonal experiences, destinations feel local and approachable, offering a fresh perspective on some of Europe’s most-visited cities.

The itineraries span the Western and Eastern Mediterranean as well as the Canary Islands, connecting cultural capitals and coastal towns across Spain, France, Italy and Greece. Voyages include ports such as Valencia, Marseille and Livorno, and Naples for access to Pompeii. Farther east, sailings explore destinations including Mykonos, Rhodes and Kusadasi, along with overnight calls in sought-after destinations allowing for more time ashore.

Exploring and enjoying two countries with fascinating and different coastlines

THE WAY WE TRAVEL SAYS A LOT about our personalities. My preference is to gravitate toward edges, places where land meets sea, where history and modernity co-exist, and a bit of grit mingles with the natural beauty. A fall journey island-hopping along Croatia’s Adriatic coast, and then south into Montenegro, provided that perfect balance – islands and walled cities, forest hikes through mountains and exploring through labyrinthine streets and alleyways. There were many surprises around hidden corners and unique experiences to be enjoyed, making the journey that much more special.
Croatia and Montenegro may share a coastline, but their geography differs. In southern Croatia, mountains slope gently toward the sea, and dozens of islands scatter across the horizon. In Montenegro, cliffs plunge into narrow inlets and bays, villages hug the coast, and the fjord-like landscape of the stunning Bay of Kotor, veiled in shadows, contrasts sharply with the bright, sun-washed Croatian coast.

In both these countries, the highlight was discovering the unexpected, both in well-travelled parts and in locations more off the beaten path. In Croatia, I ventured to some of the more famous islands off the Dalmatian coast in the southern part of the country. But even on these “known” islands, there was much to discover that no cursory Internet search would reveal. On the island of Brač lies the renowned Zlatni Rat Beach – or Golden Horn – a narrow, pebbled spit that juts into the sea, its shape shifting with the wind, and its golden hue burnishing when the sun sets. A 10-minute walk from this beach was a rocky cove where I swam naked, my bathing suit hanging from a tree branch, my body hidden from other swimmers. I hadn’t imagined following a rough meandering path on Brač, through stone and scrub, en route to a secluded 16th-century monastery, now a museum. It was the same path the Glagolitic priests walked several centuries ago. While I wore a small backpack, I learned that more than 12 men had carried a grand piano along this same path while drinking wine from a 57-litre goat bladder.

Dubrovnik - old town

The island of Korčula tempted us to explore its walled Old Town, with its maze of narrow, cobbled streets described as a mini Dubrovnik. While there were bars and cafés at every turn, we were happy to climb a steep wooden ladder up to the small opening of a 15th-Century defense tower for a glass of wine at a rooftop cocktail bar, where the drinks are delivered by pulley. Korčula is known to be an arid island but Kocje National Park, not far from the Old Town, is surprisingly lush. We hiked through dense forest, navigating past moss-covered boulders and under ivy-laced oak trees. At one point, our guide Vedran shared a local legend about dancing fairies and a villager flautist. Shrouded in the leafy stillness, it wasn’t difficult to imagine.

Mainland Croatia also had its surprises. Though white wine is usually my choice, especially in hot weather, in the Dingač wine region, in the rugged Pelješac Peninsula, the robust red wines captured my heart. Created with the native Plavac Mali grapes grown on improbably steep slopes, the rich, fruit-flavoured signature reds at Matuśko Winery were nothing less than seductive. We enjoyed this same wine again in Ston, a town known not just for wine and seafood, but for its 5.5-kilometre-long stone walls built in the 14th Century to protect the town’s salt pans – salt being a coveted resource to the region’s economy. Though Dubrovnik’s walls are famous, Ston’s are among the longest in the world.

Montenegro, our next stop, is a small country, south of Croatia and north of Albania and Greece. It’s a common destination for Europeans, but far fewer North Americans travel here. Arriving in the coastal town of Kotor, even getting to our Airbnb felt like a journey. We entered the city’s walls, climbed a steep staircase with our suitcases and then realized it was the wrong set of stairs! We finally entered a building with exterior walls covered in peeling paint and crumbling concrete – like so many buildings there – only to find a bright, modern apartment, with an open-concept living room and kitchen. Its original stone walls had been preserved as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Montenegro, the modern and the crumbling often mingle.

Dubrovnik

The Bay of Kotor, on which the town sits, is one of the more striking landscapes I’ve ever seen: deep azure blue water enclosed by cliffs, medieval villages dotting the coastline and a bevy of tiny islands – like Our Lady of the Rocks. A photographer’s dream, a bright 17th-century-blue domed church glistens at its centre. Simply seeing a photo had convinced us to go there. But it was on a hike to San Giovanni Fortress, starting from a trailhead just outside the town walls, where we experienced the most beautiful views of the bay. Returning along the popular Ladder of Kotor trail, we took a small turn, past a grove of sheep – their bells ringing sharply through the cool mountain air – and stumbled on a shepherd’s hut. A man in a track suit and slippers offered us a carafe of local wine, and a platter of goat’s cheese and freshly baked bread, which we enjoyed at a wobbly wooden table in an open cave-like setting. It was an unusually perfect seaside dining moment.

Leaving Kotor felt slightly intimidating: we wanted surprises, but not to veer off the serpentine coastal route with its 25-hairpin bends, displayed in sharp zigzags on the car’s navigation screen. Fortunately, our Albanian driver Maksiljan (hired through daytrip.com), was responsible for navigating. “Ah, fresh air,” said Maksiljan, as he rolled down the window. “You can be sure that what we eat today will be very good.” What we ate turned out to be exquisite smoked prosciutto sampled at a family-run smokehouse in the village of Njeguši that Maksiljan hadn’t known about, but my husband – a smoked meat afficionado – had somehow discovered on the internet. Prosciutto hung above us from the smokehouse’s rafters as we sampled thinly sliced pieces, washed down with their rakija, Montenegro’s national fruit brandy drink, distilled in a small copper still next door.

We had lunch at the oldest continually operating restaurant in the country. Rather than being in a claustrophobic smokehouse, we dined on the same cured ham al fresco, with a clear view of the mountains in the distance. One of our final destinations in Montenegro was Lovćen National Park. We had heard hiking would be good in Montenegro. The country’s name, translated in English as “black mountain,” implied this, but sometimes unexpected weather can add a dramatic touch to the landscape. When we hiked the Wolf Trail through quiet forest under unseasonably cool skies, dark clouds hung heavily in the sky, and strips of blue water and green mountains below formed a layered backdrop. Surrounded by so much stillness, I was reminded of something Maksiljan had said earlier: “Consider yourself travelling with friends. Everything that is possible we can do.”
This sentiment reflected the spirit of our travels. Two countries, one coastline, and an openness to discovering new geography, unexpected beauty and some fabulous secrets even in well-known places.
