A New Player on Europe’s Rivers

Contact Your Cruise Travel Expert

Century Cruises’ arrival in Europe is led by Century Star, a new ship designed for just 174 guests. The vessel began European service on the Danube in September 2026, followed by journeys on the Rhine, giving the company’s established approach to river cruising a new European setting. The result is an intriguing meeting of traditions: the grandeur and cultural depth of Europe’s historic rivers paired with the hospitality, culinary influences and design sensibility of a company whose roots lie in China.

Century Cruises has been sailing since 1992 and describes itself as having more than three decades on the water. Its European expansion builds on that history rather than starting from scratch. That distinction is particularly apparent in the scale of Century Star. The vessel has an intimate character suited to the rhythms of European river travel and rather than making the ship itself the destination, the design encourages guests to look outward - to the river, the towns and cities along its banks, and the changing landscape beyond the railings. There are French-balcony accommodations for enjoying the view from the privacy of one's stateroom, river-facing lounges for lingering over a drink, and an open sun deck where the simplest pleasure is often the most memorable: watching Europe drift past.

Rivers Entwined is Century Cruises’ philosophy of bringing cultures, people, destinations, and stories together in meaningful ways. Aboard Century Star, Europe’s destinations shape the experience through design, cuisine, art, history, and local influences, while maintaining a connection to Century’s Asian and Chinese heritage. The Heritage Collection carries that philosophy ashore through private access, remarkable local people, authentic culture, and storytelling - creating memorable experiences guests could not easily recreate on their own.

Europe, woven into the ship
On Century Star, the destination does not begin when guests step ashore. The ship's interiors were created as a kind of cultural tapestry, drawing inspiration from the countries and landscapes encountered along the Danube. The main restaurant takes its cues from Germany's Black Forest, with rich wood tones and golden details evoking the atmosphere of the region. The Bar and Lounge draws on Vienna's Baroque architecture and musical heritage, channeling the warmth of the city's traditional coffeehouses. In the lobby, the imagery of Bulgaria's Rose Valley becomes a visual bridge between European and Chinese influences. Even the accommodations continue the story. Standard staterooms take inspiration from the warmth of a Serbian home, complemented by local folklore and Chinese artistic touches. It is an approach that makes the ship feel less like a neutral hotel travelling through Europe and more like an introduction to the journey itself. The places visited during the day leave their imprint on the spaces guests return to at night.

Aft Lounge

An East-meets-West table
Food is perhaps the most immediate expression of Century Cruises' cross-cultural identity. European cuisine is accompanied by Chinese specialties, creating a dining experience that can move comfortably between familiar European flavours and dishes that offer something different. The idea is not to choose between the two traditions, but to let them coexist. It is a fitting philosophy for a journey that moves through so many layers of European history and culture - and for a company whose own story connects East and West. Dining is also designed around the river. Large windows keep the passing landscape within view, turning breakfast, lunch or dinner into another opportunity to experience the destination without leaving the ship.

The great rivers, at an unhurried pace
Century's European itineraries focus on two waterways whose names alone evoke a certain romance. On the Danube, eight-day The Blue Danube journeys run between Budapest and Passau, and connect some of Central Europe's most evocative cities and towns. Depending on the itinerary, guests visit destinations including Esztergom, Bratislava, Vienna,  Dürnstein, Melk, and Linz, before arriving in Passau.

For travellers seeking a deeper exploration of Europe's great waterways, Century Star will also offer 15-day Grand Journeys, sailing from Passau to the Black Sea and visiting ports in Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, and Slovakia, before returning to Passau, Germany.

The Rhine offers a different mood. Century’s eight-day Romantic Rhine journeys sail between Amsterdam and Basel and bring together canal-lined streets, historic towns, castles, architectural landmarks and the dramatic scenery of the Rhine Valley, visiting Cologne, Rüdesheim, Koblenz, Speyer, Mannheim and Strasbourg.  The appeal is as much in the transitions as the destinations themselves. A river cruise makes it possible to explore a grand European capital in the morning, then spend the afternoon watching vineyards, villages and forested hills pass quietly from the sun deck. And did we mention Christmas Market cruises yet? 2026 and 2027 departures are currently available, sailing between Amsterdam and Basel and bringing storybook Christmas atmosphere to its visitors.

More of the journey, already included
For travellers accustomed to carefully planned European holidays, one of river cruising's greatest luxuries is simplicity. Century's European offering includes a shore excursion at every port, English-speaking guidance and meals specified in the itinerary. Beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner, while selected sailings and stateroom categories include international airfare. Airport transfers can also be arranged when coordinated through Century Air. That structure leaves more time for the part of travel that can be hardest to schedule: simply being present. Instead of navigating trains, unpacking repeatedly or calculating the logistics of reaching the next city, guests can return to the same room each evening and let the river do the travelling.

The pleasure of slowing down
Luxury travel increasingly has less to do with adding more and more to an itinerary - and more to do with making room for the experience itself. Century Star is designed around that idea. A French balcony offers a private front-row seat to the landscape. The river-view lounges create places to read, converse or simply watch the scenery. On the sun deck, the changing light becomes entertainment of its own. Between excursions, cultural presentations and lectures add context to the places along the route, transforming sightseeing into a deeper understanding of the history and traditions encountered ashore. There is an appealing rhythm to it: explore, return, reflect, and then watch the next destination emerge.

A more considered way to travel
Century Star's contemporary design also reflects a growing awareness of how luxury travel and environmental considerations can coexist. The ship features hybrid propulsion and a hull constructed from recycled steel, and Century Cruises says the vessel complies with European Union sustainability standards aimed at net-zero carbon performance. That technology is deliberately integrated rather than presented as a distraction from the experience. The ship remains elegant and comfortable, while its underlying engineering reflects a more considered approach to river cruising.

A new chapter on familiar waters
Europe's rivers have carried merchants, monarchs, artists and travellers for centuries. Their landscapes are familiar precisely because they have inspired so much of the world's literature, music and art. Century Cruises is entering that established world with a different perspective. Century Star does not attempt to reinvent the Danube or Rhine. Instead, it brings another cultural lens to them - one shaped by more than 30 years of cruising in China, expressed through Chinese hospitality, European design references, an East-meets-West culinary philosophy and a contemporary approach to shipbuilding. And perhaps that is the most interesting thing about this new arrival. The rivers remain timeless. The cities remain gloriously themselves. But the experience of seeing them can always be refreshed. Sometimes, it only takes looking at an old journey from a new direction.
