Greek captain and Managing Director, George Moulas shares the story behind Blue Zephyr, a new premium boutique cruise ship sailing through the Greek islands. He talks about his vision for the ship, life on board and the hospitality he hopes every guest will remember.
George, what inspired you to create Blue Zephyr?
First of all, thank you for the opportunity to talk about something I am passionate about. I am Greek, I am a captain, and I have spent many years in yachting and shipping. I have visited many of our islands, and I have always wanted to share more of Greece with people from around the world. We have a word in Greek, philoxenia. To me, it means authentic Greek hospitality: welcoming guests and making them feel at home. That was part of my dream: a boutique cruise ship with the feeling of a yacht, where guests could experience that welcome while discovering the islands. Mykonos and Santorini are wonderful, but Greece has so many other places and stories to share. Blue Zephyr grew from my wish to introduce travellers to more of them. My Greek American partner understands the North American traveller very well. I bring my knowledge of Greece, its islands and its food. Together, we wanted to create a journey that would feel both genuinely Greek and comfortable for the guests we welcome.

Travellers can explore Greece in many ways. Why choose a small ship?
There are many good ways to have a vacation in Greece. You can stay at a resort, use the ferries, charter a yacht or take a cruise. I wanted Blue Zephyr to bring together things I value in those experiences: the intimate feeling of a yacht and the comfort of a cruise ship. Her size also allows us to include smaller ports and islands such as Ikaria and Sifnos in our itineraries, with time ashore to get a real sense of each place - its people, traditions and way of life-and hear the stories that give each island its character. With Blue Zephyr, you unpack once. Your suite is there when you return from a day ashore, and you can enjoy dinner on board before the next part of the journey. You get the pleasure of travelling by sea and seeing how different the islands are, without needing to charter an entire yacht. For me, that is a wonderful combination of discovery and comfort.
What does a typical day look like for a guest on Blue Zephyr?
On many nights, the ship sails while our guests sleep. You wake up, look outside and find a new island waiting for you. After breakfast, you might join an excursion, walk through a town or spend the day exploring independently. I want guests to have time to do more than take a photograph. Walk the streets, meet people, try something local and get a feeling for the place. Depending on the port and the day’s schedule, you may be able to come back to the ship for lunch or a rest, then go ashore again. That freedom to set your own pace matters to me. Our voyages from mid-April through October focus on exploring the Greek islands in depth, when island life is in full swing. I want each day to give guests a reason to be curious about where they will wake up next.
What can guests count on when they choose Blue Zephyr?
I would say four things. First, destinations worth discovering, from islands people already know to places they might never have considered visiting. Second, a ship where they can feel comfortable. Blue Zephyr was beautifully refitted in 2025, and we pay attention to keeping her very welcoming and well maintained, with safety at the centre of what we do. Third is the food. We want the culinary experience on board to reflect the Mediterranean, with Greek cuisine and flavours that we are proud to share. Food is an important part of how we share our country with our guests. Fourth is personal service. With no more than 114 guests, our crew has the opportunity to get to know the people on board. I want guests to feel looked aft er as individuals throughout their week with us.

You mentioned value. What does that word mean to you?
We know travellers have many choices, and we understand that a vacation is an important investment. Our goal was to make this kind of small-ship journey accessible to more people. We believe our fares are fair and competitive for the experience guests receive: their suite, meals on board, beer wine and beverages with lunch and dinner, personal service and the opportunity to discover several memorable destinations. I hope they look back on the entire week—the places they visited, the time they had together and how they felt on board - and feel it was time and money well spent.
What would you most like guests to tell their friends after the voyage?
I have always believed that a recommendation from a guest means more than anything we could say in an advertisement. A friend can tell you what it actually felt like to spend a week with us on Blue Zephyr. I will be on board to meet our guests, celebrate with them and help them whenever they need something. Most of all, I will have the chance to share something I am very proud of, and that’s Greece. My team, our crew and I want guests to feel welcome and well looked aft er throughout their week on Blue Zephyr. If they return home and tell their friends, “You should experience this for yourself,” that will mean more to me than any advertisement.
