Silversea Update: New Ships, Recent Refurbs & Its 2020/2021 Asia Collection

Silversea Cruises is growing at an accelerated rate and will welcome two new ships in 2020 – the Silver Origin will join the Expedition Fleet and sail the Galapagos Islands commencing in July, and the much-anticipated Silver Moon sets off on her inaugural voyage in August. In addition, the current fleet has undergone a number of refurbishments, including the Silver Cloud which is now designated as a “hybrid” ship. Having originally sailed in the Classic ultra-luxury fleet, since the company’s inception in 1994, she is now classified as a Polar Class vessel since her major overhaul and refurbishment in late 2017. And her sister, Silver Wind will undergo the same ice-class renovation later next year.

I toured Silver Cloud in Quebec City recently - she is a lovely ship, with those typical classic cruise ship lines, a dark hull and expansive public rooms that bely the fact that she is sailing on expedition focused itineraries around the world with visits to both polar regions, can cut through ice, deploy Zodiacs and also sail in warm and tropical waters on fascinating global voyages. She offers a wonderful bridge between a luxury small ship and a vessel suited for immersive exploration and her refit has simply enhanced all of her charming features.

Ships in both the Expedition and Classic fleets for Silversea Cruises offer a luxurious and all-inclusive on board lifestyle with marvellous amenities, a choice of fine dining and excellent suite accommodations as I can personally testify. Asia 2020/21

Silversea sails back to the delights of Asia in 2020/21, unveiling its exotic collection of itineraries that highlight 58 spectacular destinations in 18 countries. Featuring seven voyages apiece aboard Silver Muse and Silver Spirit between September 2020 and May 2021, itineraries call on the major ports of Mumbai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo, along with multiple overnights in various Vietnamese destinations and fascinating roundtrip voyages from Tokyo during the cherry blossom season.

As one has come to expect from Silversea, guests on these voyages will have the opportunity to delve deeply into the enchanting cultures of Asia through immersive shore experiences and various onboard enrichments, travelling – as always – in superlative comfort.

New for 2020/21, there is a 15-day circumnavigation of Japan’s largest island, Honshu, that travels roundtrip from Tokyo aboard Silver Muse, the cruise line’s flagship. Departing on April 5, 2021, Silversea guests will journey closer to the authentic beauty of Asia, calling at Shimizu; Kobe, on an overnight call; and Hiroshima; before reaching Yeosu in South Korea. Subsequently, guests will explore Kanazawa, Niigata, Akita, Aomori, and Hakodate, ahead of arriving back in Tokyo on April 19, 2021.

No words can adequately sum up Japan. A dizzying fusion of modernity and an almost sacred appreciation of heritage, Japan is an eloquent expression of past and future. Neon city jungles are commonplace; Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama and Kobe all tip the scales in terms of population but scratch the surface and you’ll find peace and tranquility on every street corner. Nature too is placed at the forefront of culture; without mentioning the famous Sakura (cherry blossom) season, the country’s snow-capped soaring peaks and sun-drenched beaches are startling in their diversity, stunning in their beauty.

Also featured as part of its 2020/2021 collection, Silversea takes its guests to Vietnam, a country that is equal parts paradise, luxury, adventure and spirituality; Thailand, a country of dazzling beauty and diversity; advanced, airy and elevated Singapore, with its spectacular, futuristic vision of utopian city life; China’s showpiece city, Shanghai, with its staggering scope and scale; and so much more.
