Luxury in the Canary Islands
Not named after the birds but rather the dogs that once roamed here, the Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa. With a year-round spring-like climate and winter temperatures ranging from 18 ̊C to 24 ̊C, the islands have long been a favourite sun destination. Gran Canaria, one of the archipelago’s most populous islands, is prized for its striking contrast of rugged volcanic terrain and golden coastline, and on its southern tip, about 30 minutes from Las Palmas airport, lies the Grand Hotel Residencia. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World and part of Seaside Collection, the two-storey boutique resort has 94 rooms and suites, designed in elegant Spanish Colonial style. Surrounded by palms, bougainvillea, flowering shrubs, and towering cacti, the property feels like a private oasis. At its centre is a free-form saltwater pool lined with loungers, where attentive servers deliver drinks and lunch directly to guests.

Chirping birds and cooling breezes complete the tranquil atmosphere. The interiors blend Spanish Colonial design, with hand-painted tiles, wrought-iron details, glass lanterns, dark woods, and rattan furnishings, accented by cheerful touches of - what else - canary yellow. Guest rooms continue the warm Colonial-inspired feel with porcelain lamps, wooden shutters, tiled bathrooms, and private balconies or terraces. Junior Suites add separate living and sleeping areas, while one-bedroom suites provide greater comfort and privacy.

The hotel’s wellness facilities include the serene spa, featuring a Finnish sauna, eucalyptus-and-mint-scented steam baths, a salt cave, a saltwater wellness pool, and an extensive menu of treatments. Guests can also participate in Aqua-Gym sessions or work out in the fitness centre. Locally caught seafood, Canarian specialties, and island-produced cheeses are served on the restaurant’s elevated terrace, with views across the rugged inland mountains. The lavish barbecue buff et is particularly memorable, with fresh fish, prawns, steaks, pork, and lamb chops grilled to order. A glass of Guajiro, Canary Island honey rum, makes a fitting nightcap. Just 200 metres away lie Maspalomas Beach and the island’s iconic dunes, formed over millennia from Saharan sands and sediments carried from the island’s ravines. A peaceful walk across the undulating landscape followed by a dip in the Atlantic provided the perfect complement to the hotel’s relaxed elegance. Grand Hotel Residencia is known for a sentiment often echoed by guests: “I wish I could stay longer.” By the end of a stay, it is easy to understand why.
